The Chelsea Groton Bank is made up of passionate individuals who bring dedication, creativity, and passion to everything they do. This month, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Larry Walker, Director of Technology, who has been instrumental in leading the Bank through many waves of digital innovation since 1992. Larry has also been an avid collector of Chelsea Groton memorabilia. Let’s get to know Larry and his passion for collecting.
Can you share a bit about your time working here at Chelsea Groton.
I started at Chelsea Groton in 1992. My current role is the Director of Technology, but when I first started, I had to share a computer which I got a few hours a day with. In my time here I’ve been able to work with great people and tackle a range of projects such as building the Bank’s first network and virtualizing our system of servers to name a few.
What intrigued you to start collecting Chelsea Groton memorabilia?
A previous Chelsea Groton employee, George Strouse, was an ardent collector and showed me some memorabilia he had on display at our Norwich branch. He was the catalyst that got me started.

Do you have a favorite item in your collection?
There are a few favorites in my collection currently. I have a Liberty Bell Coin Bank from 1919 that was given to honor World War 1 veterans. In addition, I have a collection of checks from the 1800s that say Chelsea Savings Bank and the store it was for. One example is from a seed company. On the check, the dollar amount is crossed off as it was reduced each time a harvest shipment came in.
Is there a certain item you are searching for?
I’m always on the hunt for any missing Chelsea Savings Bank coin banks I don’t have. I’m also eager to find any Groton Savings Bank items from the 1800s. Those are hard to find!
