Spotlight on United Service Organizations

For more than 80 years, the United Service Organizations (USO) has offered a “home away from home” for the military community. In New England, it continues to provide comfort, connection, and care, making sure service members and their families always feel supported.

How long have you been operating in the community?
The USO has served the military community since 1941, with USO New England proudly supporting service members and their families across the region for over 80 years.

What is your mission?
The mission of the USO is to strengthen the well-being of the people serving in America’s military and their families by keeping them connected to family, home, and country. As a private, non-profit organization, we provide “comforts of home” through centers, entertainment, and support services.

What products, services, or programs do you offer?
USO New England operates airport lounges, family support services, troop care packages, holiday programs, and recreational and entertainment events for active-duty service members and their families.

What makes your organization unique?
Today’s USO continuously adapts to the needs of our men and women in uniform and their families, so they can focus on their very important mission. We are the only military support organization that serves on the front lines. We are the bridge between the civilian community and the military, offering a welcoming, home-away-from-home environment for service members and connecting them with the gratitude of the communities they protect.

What do you enjoy most about the work you do?
There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the face of a service member light up when they walk into one of our centers. It’s really special to know that a warm meal, a comfortable space, or a familiar face can make an enormous difference in the life of someone who sacrifices so much for all of us.

What do you value most about the community you serve?
We are deeply moved by the resilience, dedication, and quiet strength of our military families. They carry burdens most people never see, and the honor of standing beside them every day is something we never take for granted.

Who do you serve, and what impact do you hope to make?
We serve active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, veterans, and military families across the globe and right here in New England. Our hope is that every person who walks through our doors feels seen, valued, and supported — and that no one who serves ever feels alone.
