What is Card Skimming?

Paying at the pump, running in for a quick beverage at the convenience store, or picking up tonight’s dinner from the grocery store are things we often do without much thought. But did you know a simple errand may lead to your cards being skimmed?

What is Card Skimming?

Card skimming is when a 3rd party card reading device is attached to a payment processing station. It collects information from your cards’ magnetic strip, including cardholder name, card number, and expiration date. Information gathered can be used in the future to make unauthorized purchases online or over the phone, sell data to other scammers for profit, identity theft, or create counterfeit cards.

How can you prevent it?

It’s important when combatting fraud to be aware. Scammers are hoping to pray on emotions or routine. Before paying, inspect the card reader and keypad. Does the card reader feel loose or wiggle? If so, it might have been tampered with. Also keep an eye out for hidden cameras. Scammers use devices like those to discover PINs. When possible, consider using a contactless payment method.

Look for this symbol at check-out or pay using Mobile Wallet.

If your card is skimmed, report it to your card issuer immediately. For Chelsea Groton customers who believe their card has been skimmed, please contact Customer Care at 860-448-4200.
