Chelsea Groton Bank to Relocate Downtown Norwich Branch to Mercantile Exchange Building

Chelsea Groton Bank, whose Norwich roots date back to 1858, has announced plans to relocate their Downtown branch, located at One Franklin Square/300 Main Street, to the Mercantile Exchange Building, 55 Main Street, Norwich. The Bank announced the sale of its longtime location in December. At the time of the sale, Chelsea Groton shared the intention of relocating the Downtown Norwich branch to a nearby location. The Connecticut Department of Banking approved this move on February 20, 2025, following a thorough application review and a 10-day public comment period. The FDIC provided regulatory approval to establish a new branch in Downtown Norwich on February 26, 2025.

“Chelsea Groton Bank has played an integral role in Norwich since 1858 by providing financial services, supporting individuals and local businesses, and contributing to the local economy. When we decided to sell our building in Downtown Norwich, we did so with a firm commitment to the people of Norwich that we were not leaving. We’re thrilled to announce our planned move into a newly designed branch in the Mercantile Exchange Building,” shared Anthony A. Joyce, III, President and CEO of Chelsea Groton Bank.

“The new space will support our customers in new and innovative ways, from high tech tools to connect people to subject matter experts throughout the Bank, to high touch opportunities to learn from team members and each other in a comfortable environment. While some Bank customers have migrated to online banking, we feel that brick and mortar locations and one-on-one personal service continue to be of utmost importance, which is why we’re investing in this relocation project,” continued Joyce.

Chelsea Groton Bank is proud to continue its legacy in downtown Norwich. The Bank anticipates moving into the new branch location by July 1, 2025. Chelsea Groton’s branch team will continue to serve customers from the One Franklin Square/300 Main Street location until June 27, 2025.
