Text Messaging Scam

A bank in Connecticut is currently the target of a scam to obtain customer information through text messaging on cell phones. Recently, customers and non-customers have reported that they are receiving text messages from the bank informing them that their debit card has been locked, and are instructed to call a number to reactivate it. Upon calling, they receive a recording where they are instructed to enter their card and pin numbers.

Some customers have lost money, but the potential loss to customers is very large.

Debit card holders of this bank have received a letter warning them of this scam, and the authorities have been notified. Other financial institutions in the area have been recently hit with the same problem. Scammers will pick specific phone prefixes and send text (or voice mail) messages. If you feel you have been targeted by a text messaging scam please report it to your carrier immediately.

PLEASE NOTE: Chelsea Groton Bank will NEVER ask you for your card number unless you are calling for assistance. You should NEVER share your pin number with anyone.
